Nigerian Army Decorates 35 Senior Officers, Defence Chief Calls for Commitment to Democracy and National Security

The Nigerian Army decorated 35 newly promoted Major Generals in an investiture ceremony held on Monday, December 23, 2024, at the Army Headquarters Command Officers’ Mess 1 in Asokoro, Abuja.


The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, who graced the event as the Special Guest of Honour, commended the officers for their dedication, professionalism, and sacrifices in service to the nation. General Musa described their promotion as a symbol of hope for Nigerians and a call to intensify efforts in addressing the country’s security challenges.

“Your elevation is a testament to your sacrifices and commitment to national service,” he remarked, urging the officers to remain steadfast in their roles, prioritize troop welfare, and uphold the tenets of democracy. He also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the promotions, reaffirming the officers' loyalty to the Commander-in-Chief and their determination to secure the nation.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, congratulated the newly promoted officers and their families, emphasizing the critical role of family support in their successes. He urged the officers to justify the trust reposed in them by the Nigerian Army and the nation. General Oluyede also extended his appreciation to President Tinubu, the Minister of Defence, Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, and the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Muhammad Bello Matawalle, for their support and leadership.


Representing the newly promoted officers, Major General LG Lepdung expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for endorsing their promotions. He pledged the officers’ collective dedication to enhancing the effectiveness of the Armed Forces and contributing to national development.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Senator Abdulazeez Musa Yar’adua, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army; Honourable Aminu Balele, Chairman of the House Committee on Army; Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla; and representatives of the Chief of the Air Staff and the Inspector General of Police. Former Chiefs of Defence Staff, Principal Staff Officers, Corps Commanders, Commandants of training institutions, members of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), and other well-wishers were also present.


The ceremony underscored the Nigerian Army’s commitment to professional development and national security, as well as the importance of leadership and unity within the Armed Forces.
