EDO ELECTION: OBASEKI URGES PEOPLE TO AVOID VIOLENCE, ASSURES JUSTICE WILL PREVAIL

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has called on residents to remain calm and refrain from resorting to violence following the outcome of Saturday’s governorship election. After Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was declared the winner, Obaseki reassured the people of Edo that justice will be pursued through legal avenues.

In his statement, the governor acknowledged the widespread frustration over the electoral process, which he described as being marred by “impunity and reckless disregard for due process and the law.” He emphasized that, while many may feel disempowered by the results, violence is not a viable solution.

"In recent months, various political parties have campaigned vigorously to present their candidates for the office of governor to the people of Edo State. This effort culminated in yesterday’s gubernatorial election," Obaseki noted.

"The beauty of democracy lies in the power it gives the people to choose their leaders. When this power is forcibly taken from them, it is not only a tragedy but a mockery of democracy," he continued.

"The results of the September 21st election have understandably left many Edo citizens disheartened, feeling powerless against the very institutions meant to protect their rights. It is only natural that many are saddened and aggrieved," Obaseki remarked.

Despite the disappointment, he urged his fellow citizens to remain peaceful and avoid destructive actions in response to the situation. "In this moment of despair, I implore all Edo people to remain calm and resist the temptation to resort to violence or property destruction, despite the provocation. Peace and justice will ultimately prevail, and that is my call to all who feel wronged at this time," Obaseki said.

He also encouraged those dissatisfied with the election results to pursue legal means of addressing their grievances, reminding them that democracy provides avenues for resolving disputes.

Obaseki concluded by urging Edo citizens to continue with their daily activities lawfully, assuring them that the government remains committed to their safety and well-being.
