Nigerian Military Shifts to Smart Warfare With Digital Transformation

The Nigerian Army (NA) is set to revolutionize its operational strategies through the adoption of cutting-edge digital technology, aiming to enhance national security and combat emerging threats effectively.

This development was highlighted during a digital transformation seminar organized by the Department of Army Transformation and Innovation at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja. The seminar, themed "Enhancing NA Operational Efficiency Through Digital Transformation and Innovation within a Joint and Multi-Agency Environment," emphasized the role of artificial intelligence and digitalization in modern warfare.

Speaking at the event, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, represented by Commander NA Cyber Warfare Command, Major General Adeleke Ayannuga, noted that the military is transitioning from traditional combat methods to smart, technology-driven operations. He stressed that digital transformation would enhance troops' efficiency in fire support, improve all-weather combat capabilities, and minimize collateral damage during military operations.

The COAS also underscored the importance of collaboration with security agencies, private sector players, academic institutions, and local communities to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges effectively. He emphasized that the Nigerian Army is committed to fostering partnerships and leveraging innovation to build a well-equipped, combat-ready force capable of fulfilling its constitutional duties.

General Oluyede reaffirmed his command philosophy, stating that the Army's transformation efforts align with his vision to build a highly motivated and technologically advanced military force. He commended Army personnel for their dedication to tackling insecurity nationwide and urged them to embrace innovation-driven solutions for future security challenges.

He further expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, acknowledging his strategic leadership and unwavering support for the Nigerian Army. He assured personnel that under his watch, the Army would continue to receive the necessary resources and guidance to enhance operational effectiveness.

In his welcome address, Chief of Transformation and Innovation (Army), Major General Olusegun Abai, stated that the seminar aims to actualize the COAS’ command philosophy, which prioritizes the adoption of 21st-century military infrastructure and digital technology. He emphasized the need for collaboration with other military and government agencies to harness local technological solutions for national security.

The seminar was attended by high-ranking officials, including representatives from the Nigerian Navy, Air Force, Police, Customs Service, Defence Intelligence, and other paramilitary agencies, as well as senior officers from the Defence and Army Headquarters.

With this initiative, the Nigerian Army is positioning itself at the forefront of digital transformation, ensuring a more efficient, technologically advanced military force ready to confront contemporary security threats.
