Security Crisis: Bandits Take Over Nigeria's Largest Military Training Camp, Displace 23 Communities

Bandits have reportedly taken control of a major military cantonment in Nigeria, which serves as the training ground for the Nigerian Army’s artillery corps. This alarming development prompted the Niger State House of Assembly to raise urgent concerns about the Nagwamase military cantonment in Kontagora Local Government Area.

Lawmakers highlighted that the presence of bandits has displaced residents in 23 surrounding communities, as the armed groups have established multiple camps in the area. During a plenary on Tuesday, Abdullahi Isah, representing the Kontagora II constituency, raised the issue through a motion of urgent public importance.

Mr. Isah informed the Assembly that non-state actors now occupy the large expanse of land used for military training, which stretches into both Kontagora and Mariga local councils. Since the takeover, frequent attacks have forced the relocation of farming communities, and some abductees remain in the custody of the gunmen.

The Assembly has urged the state government to collaborate with military authorities to clear the camp of the bandits and restore safety to the host communities, allowing residents to return to their homes.
