TROOPS ARREST NOTORIOUS GUNRUNNERS AND SEIZE LARGE CACHE OF WEAPONS IN PLATEAU STATE
In a significant operation to combat illegal arms trafficking, troops from Operation SAFE HAVEN have apprehended five suspected gunrunners and seized a substantial cache of weapons in Plateau State. The intelligence-driven raid, which began at midnight on September 16, 2024, and extended into the early hours of September 17, targeted a known hideout of the criminal network.
The operation, conducted in the Naraguta Mining Area at Bayameni along Bauchi Road in Jos North Local Government Area, resulted in the arrest of the prime suspect, identified as Mohammed Sani, along with four accomplices. The troops recovered a range of weapons and ammunition, including:
- Two AK-47 rifles
- One Fabrique Nationale automatic rifle
- Fourteen AK-47 magazines
- One Fabrique Nationale magazine
- 5,316 rounds of 7.62 MM (Special)
- Ninety-eight rounds of 7.62 MM (NATO)
- Forty-three rounds of 9 MM
The arrested suspects are currently undergoing interrogation to provide critical intelligence that could lead to the arrest of other members of the gunrunning syndicate and disrupt their supply chain.
Major Stephen Nantip Zhakom, the Military Public Information Officer for Operation SAFE HAVEN, stated that the operation underscores the commitment of the Nigerian Army to eradicating illegal arms and enhancing security in the region.
