Troops Bust Major Oil Theft Ring in Lagos, Arrest 14 Suspects Near Dangote Refinery

Troops of the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army have foiled a large-scale illegal petroleum bunkering operation in the Lekki Free Zone area of Lagos State, arresting 14 suspected oil thieves and recovering equipment used in the illicit activity.

The operation, carried out in the early hours of April 16, 2026, followed credible intelligence on ongoing illegal siphoning activities near the Dangote Refinery axis. Acting swiftly, troops stormed the location and apprehended the suspects while they were actively transferring petroleum products.

Investigations revealed that the suspects had constructed an illegal pipeline stretching from the high sea to a concealed tanker within a bush area. The operation was powered by a generator-driven pumping system used to siphon products into the tanker.

Upon sighting the troops, the suspects attempted to flee but were quickly overpowered and arrested.

Items recovered at the scene include a tanker truck loaded with siphoned petroleum products, a Lexus Highlander SUV, a Ford Hilux vehicle, a pumping machine, a 40-horsepower boat engine, and large quantities of industrial hosepipes and other bunkering equipment.

The suspects and recovered items are currently in military custody for preliminary investigation and will be handed over to appropriate authorities for prosecution.

The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to tackling crude oil theft and protecting critical national infrastructure, urging members of the public to continue providing credible information to support ongoing security operations.
